A dropped ceiling is basically a separate ceiling that’s hung above the main ceiling in a building or structure. It can also be known as a false ceiling or grid ceiling; a grid ceiling or a dropped ceiling; T-bar ceiling; false grid ceiling; suspended ceiling; grid ceiling; drop ceiling; and T-grid ceiling.
A dropped ceiling that is not attached to the ceiling of a new house or apartment can be the result of several reasons. The most common reason is due to a roof leak. A roof leak can cause a ceiling to be detached from its supporting beams and this results in the ceiling falling down and creating a dropped ceiling problem. This is most commonly seen on homes with metal roofs.
When a ceiling falls it is usually covered up by plaster or wood. The first thing that you will notice when a ceiling falls is a noticeable difference between the floors and walls. If you are working on a new home or building, you will probably notice that the ceiling has already been patched. If the area around the ceiling has not yet been patched, there is no need to worry as this is an easy repair that can be done on your own.
The next most common cause of a dropped ceiling is from the weight of a suspended ceiling fan. When ceiling fans are placed inside of a room, they often have a weight on top of them that tends to pull the ceiling in. If this is the case with the ceiling fans in your home, you will notice that the fan is pulling the ceiling upward when it is in use. To get rid of this problem you simply need to remove the ceiling fan and any attached ceiling fixtures.
Other common reasons for a dropped ceiling are caused by improperly fastened down or improperly installed beams. In order to fix this type of ceiling problem you will need to either cut away some of the beams or use brackets. This is usually something that you will have to do by yourself unless you have some experience doing this kind of work.
Dropped ceiling problems can be fixed with very little effort but there are times when it is necessary to call in a professional. If a ceiling in your home or office falls and is too high to be repaired, it may require the services of a licensed roofing contractor.
